A good aesthetic appeal can never make up for a lack in performance where your website design is concerned. One very common occurrence in many websites owned by amateurs is the use of fancy graphic works that need a very long time to load them.
Here are five important website design rules of thumb to observe which should ensure your website performs well.
1) Don’t use splash pages.
The splash pages are the fancy pages you see when you enter a website. They are dazzling pages that have images with words such as ‘welcome’ or ‘click here to enter’.
They are pages with no purpose, and serves to discourage uses from fully utilizing the actual purpose of the website due to their slow loading time. The slow loading time often gives extra incentive for visitors to click on the back button in frustration.
2) Banners must be kept minimal
These are usually large adverts placed at the top of the web page but can also be at the bottom too. Banner ad tends to be ignored by most web surfers so it is a total majority of the web surfers so they would a total waste of your website space. The best way to utilize web space would be to use good contents and weave your affiliate links into them so that the users would not feel coerced into buying.
3) The best sites are always easy to navigate
The best navigation would one that a young child can understand. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered drop down menus. Any form of complicated navigation will cause them to leave your site for good. The best method to avoid this problem is to construct a sitemap as part of your website design that shows, and links, to every page in your site.
4) A clear indication of where the user is at the moment is good to assist navigation
You will want to help your users feel in control by giving them a clear view of where they are at your website. With this map, they can directly head to the information they are looking for. This can be achieved by making sure that each page has its own title and some form of trail that shows them which links they have been to and which is new for them. If you create any form of confusion, you will drive the visitors away.
5) Do you really need to include audio?
Avoid the use of music if you can. The sounds when added can enhance an experience, but when played over and over gain it can start to be irritating. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it – volume or muting controls would work fine.
If you use all these tricks of website design effectively, you will in time that your visitors will likely return again and again to your site.
