Achieving optimal performance is the most important factor in a website design. Many new webmasters feel the need to entertain their visitor by adding expensive, fancy flash works that can actually hamper the optimal performance of their site.
There are five website design rules you can follow to help you build that optimal performance website that rocks.
1) Splash pages should be left out when optimal performance is a priority
Splash pages are dazzling fancy pages you often see when you first arrive at a website. They are dazzling pages that have images with words such as ‘welcome’ or ‘click here to enter’. In fact, they are just a ‘pretty vase’ that serves no real purpose. Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.
2) Try using less banner advertisement if you can
The most common place for these large advertising banners to be placed is close to the page header but the bottom of the page is also quite popular too. Even the newbie to the internet have trained themselves to ignore banner ads so placing them would only waste precious real estate space. A better solution would be to add useful web contents and weave affiliate links artfully into them.
3) Make it an effort to make navigation very simple
You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it.
Avoid the use of flash menus or multi-tiered menus because generally they are not a good idea as far as easy navigation is concerned. Any form of complicated navigation will cause them to leave your site for good. It is good in any website design to include a sitemap to help them find what they are looking for.
4) Have a clear indication of where the user is
Give them a clear view of where they are now and how to get to where they want to be. This will provide the visitor with their exact location at any point while they look around your site. Make sure that every page has its own title and that some form of breadcrumb trail is used to track the visitors step throughout the entire website. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means they will leave!
5) Reconsider the necessity to include audio in the website
If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they’re not annoyed by some audio looping on and on at your website. While some music can enhance the experience, even the most beautiful of sounds becomes irritating if it is played continuously. Using audios may not always be a good idea, if you have to include them be sure to allow for some form of user control such as volume or muting ability.
